Welcome to Glen Burnie, Maryland

Glen Burnie, Maryland has a unique history behind its development. Located in Anne Arundel County, Glen Burnie is considered a census-designated place, not a city! According to the 2010 census, the population is over 67,000 people, which makes this city larger than most cities not only in Anne Arundel County, but in Maryland in general!

The history of Glen Burnie dates back to 1812. Elias Glenn established a county seat as “Glennsburne”, which was changed to “Glennsbourne Farm” and to modern day “Glen Burnie”. Glenn’s children and grandchildren were given his property, which led to the name changes. Eventually, in 1854, William Glenn, Elias’ grandson incorporated Curtis Creek Mining into his family’s property, which was a prosperous company. After his death, Glen Burnie became its own subdivision and area in 1888.

Glen Burnie was a major point of interest for growth because of its convenient location. It was a 35 minute drive between Washington, Baltimore and Annapolis, an incredibly ideal location. It became a popular spot with locals because of distance, and offered more affordable housing. The residential growth in the past 20 years has been considerable. Glen Burnie offers affordable housing from your first time home buyer to waterfront living!
